Yes. We did indeed take kids to the demonstrations against the parliament prorogation this weekend. The prorogation was a cowardly, spineless and undemocratic act. I am glad that at least some people felt compelled to come out and tell Stephen Harper that he is people’s employee and that he can’t just give himself a three-month long paid leave of absence just because his job title is prime minister. If he bothered to read the job description, I believe he would find somewhere in there a clause that compels him to answer even those questions he does not like.
In the design and tech news, Apple today revealed iPad. Very cool, but not for me – yet. I want an SD card slot, iPhoto and handwriting recognition. I know Steve Jobs hates stylus, but stylus actually makes sense as an input method on a device of this kind. Keep the virtual keyboard, but give me some options. There is a whole bunch of other technical aspects that are underwhelming, but that’s what generations two, three, four and so on are for.

For the past six years, I have been blogging using a truly wonderful engine whose owners just announced that they will not be able to provide the users with additional space on their servers. That left me with little choice but to finally migrate to an actual hosting service and take a bit more control over the whole process. Unfortunately, the migration path is not going to be easy and I will have to transfer some 800+ posts manually. I am, in a way, looking forward to revisiting some of the old stuff and fixing as many of the broken links as possible. The old blog will remain active for as long as the server owners choose to keep the content available. I haven’t exactly settled on the look and feel of the new blog so expect many and sometimes drastic changes.
The photograph above is one in a series I made in the summer of 2008 while working on a story for CBC radio about the annual church service on Wood Island in southern New Brunswick.
