Housekeeping post.

Instead of the ‘Currently reading’ section below, I have introduced a little widget courtesy of Library Thing. This is sort of a facebook for book lovers, but it actually provides some functionality as well. It also comes with an interesting idea on how to monetize a social media site – the first 200 books you enter into your library are free, but than you can either pay $10/year for unlimited entries or $25 for a lifetime membership. And there are interesting perks for members like being able to review books before they are released. Imagine if facebook people thought of it first. Your first 50 friends are free and for $25 you can add as many as you want without ever having to pay again. I’d go for it, but I don’t think that I would go for it now. With 200 million users, facebook dudes would now have cool $5 billion in the bank. Ah well…

The second housekeeping item has to do with the fact that I will also be occasionally blogging on Signal Blog. I will crosspost the entries here most of the time.

And the third item is just a note that I am going to be insanely busy over the next two months. I will be traveling to Halifax, possibly Calgary, then Burlington and later to Change Islands and Fogo island in the north of the province.

I think that’s as much housekeeping as I am inclined to do at the moment.

There are many things that Newfoundlanders do right and Sweet Relic is one of them. Those who know us can imagine what a little slice of heaven a place that sells books, coffee and chocolate is to us. This also happens to be one of the oldest standing structures in the city.Granny Bates is a children’s bookstore that is just as lovely. We haven’t been in Chapters since we moved to this neighbourhood four months ago.

My brother’s been a busy bee and is wrapping up the work on a short animated film. Here is the trailer:

Most of what you see is his work. The kid is amazingly good at what he does, eh.

Holy Photoshop, Batman! This is getting ridiculous. Just stop it people. Stop it. It’s not artistic, it has nothing to do with style, it’s just fakery and lousy photography. And it can also be bigotry and misogyny as is the case with the two ultra-Orthodox Jewish newspapers that digitally removed women ministers from a cabinet photo. Just stop it. It looks stupid, too.

Now with that out of the way, here are links to some interesting photography. I don’t know if I linked before to New York Times One in 8 Million project, but this is the best piece of visual journalism to emerge on-line. It’s brilliant in its simplicity and it shows that what counts is the same thing that always counted – good story, tight editing and clean, honest photography.

There is a photobook I am planning to get my hands on sometime soon. Belgrade Belongs to Me is a collection of photographs by a Serbian photographer who goes by the name Boogie. You can see samples here.

And to continue on some earlier posts about economy, geography and photography I want to send you to two places. Detroit is a city defined by industry, cars and ‘machine space’. Ian Willms’ haunting images capture the collapse and disfunction of that space.

NYT produces a good piece on foreclosures and Take Back the Land group.

This is a photo just outside my front door.
